Wayfound was commissioned by Western Downs Regional Council (QLD) to develop a whole of destination integrated tourism wayfinding and signage strategy. The purpose of the Strategy is to ensure that current and future signage facilitates safe and positive journeys and enhances the dispersal of visitors and their connection with the people and the places of the Western Downs Region. Improved tourism signage will help to create positive first impressions, assist easy and safe visitor movement and wayfinding, inform visitors of the range of attractions and services available at the destination and increase business confidence and civic pride within the Western Downs community.

In 2023 WDRC adopted its Tourism & Destination Events Strategy 2023-2028. This strategy will help expand the visitor economy to the Western Downs by providing leading experiences, delivering for our communities, and enabling strong and sustainable local businesses.

The tourism signage strategy was delivered in the following stages;

  • Pre-visit research and project planning.
  • Entire WDRC tourism signage audit and stakeholder engagement.
  • Development and delivery of the completed signage audit report, signage strategy, implementation plan and benchmark report.

As Tourism Program Leader for Western Downs Regional Council, I’m pleased to endorse Wayfound’s Regional Signage Assessment & Strategy. Selected through a competitive process, Wayfound exceeded expectations by cataloguing over 1,000 signs across our 37,937km² region.

Their proactive approach to community and industry consultation was commendable, managing group and individual sessions with skill.

Wayfound conducted a comprehensive audit of wayfinding and tourism signage, aiming to enhance visitor direction and extend their stay. Kim’s meticulous attention to detail and timely delivery resulted in a strategy with detailed recommendations for implementation over 12-36 months. It was a pleasure working with such a professional consultant, and the strategy was enthusiastically received by our council.
Currently, we’re focusing on immediate fixes like installing new brown tourism signage and replacing damaged or outdated signage, with further recommendations in the pre-budget stage. I highly recommend Wayfound for assessing signage opportunities in your region.
