Tourism signage consultancy Wayfound undertook a commission from Destination Southern NSW (DSNSW) to formulate a comprehensive integrated tourism wayfinding and signage strategy for the five local government areas constituting the Southern Tablelands. The Strategy aims to ensure that both current and future signage facilitates safe and positive journeys, promoting the dispersal of visitors and fostering their connection with the people and places of the Southern Tablelands.

The Southern Tablelands comprise the LGAs Hilltops Council, Upper Lachlan Council, Yass Valley Council, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, and Goulburn Mulwaree Council. Situated to the north and east of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), the Southern Tablelands span nearly 27,000 km² with a combined population of almost 140,000.

Over the years, the regional approach to signage has been notably ad-hoc, lacking overall planning for the design and placement of signage within the LGAs or across the entire region. Signage deployment occurs on an individual basis, resulting in a diverse array of sign types, sizes, and placements. This approach creates a multitude of signs vying for the attention of visitors. Consequently, the region expresses a desire to develop a strategy that establishes guidelines for all future signage planning and application.

I had the pleasure of working with Kim D’Alton when he successfully bid to deliver a major signage strategy for our region. From our very first communication until the ‘on time and on budget’ delivery of the project, I found Kim to be the consummate professional.
He is able to combine his graphic design and project management skills to deliver not just extremely functional but beautifully readable documents. Kim set himself an ambitious timeline and was able to deal with the inevitable roadblocks that arise with every project and deliver his work within the agreed schedule. His attention to detail and productivity are impressive.
I am very proud of our strategy and very pleased with our decision to work with Kim.
