Shire of Kondinin (Wave Rock) – Bilingual tourism signage

Background

Wayfound and Earthcare Landscapes were engaged by the Shire of Kondinin to advise councillors and Shire staff on infrastructure improvements needed for Wave Rock.

Solution

We met at Wave Rock and conducted a site survey. We then presented a brief recommendations report so the Shire could budget and prioritise the work required. Our recommendations included removal of old signage, replacement and consolidation of regulatory signage, relocation of interpretive signs, installation of boardwalks in environmentally sensitive sections, better trail definition and weed control.

Wave Rock has many Chinese visitors and many were not aware of the do’s and don’ts at the site. They were inadvertently disturbing wildlife habitats by moving some small rocks. So, we proposed that the information on signs be bilingual English/Mandarin.

The Shire then commissioned Wayfound to redesign all of the Wave Rock regulatory signage. This included the Mandarin translations, which we commissioned. We designed a system of signs to ensure information was conveyed clearly and in a coherent hierarchy. We completed the layout and oversaw the signage fabrication process.

Deliverable

Bilingual English/Mandarin signage has now been supplied for installation by the Shire at Wave Rock.
