Wayfound was asked to assist the PTA with planning improvements to signage and wayfinding for the Perth Train station. Issues for passengers finding their way in and around the station had emerged and changes to the station layout, services and the surrounding areas (eg: Yagan Square) had added to these issues.
To identify the issues with wayfinding, we undertook a process that involved observation of passengers and talking with customer service staff about common questions and problems.
We mapped out circulation pathways and preferred routes to train lines, buses, faciliities, information, exits.
We also completed an inventory and assessment of existing signs, considering the PTA signage style guide and system-wide requirements. We also considered best practice in sign design (including clarity, legibility, content, location and function) and requirements for good wayfinding systems, which aim to answer the following questions.
- Where am I?
- Where do I need to go?
- How do I get where I want to go?
- What is the quickest route?
- How long will it take or how far is it?
- Where can I find facilities and serivces I need (eg. toilets, tickets, information)?
- Where can I get help?
