City of Rockingham (CRO) commissioned tourism signage consultancy Wayfound to undertake a whole of destination tourism wayfinding and signage audit and to
develop a comprehensive recommendations report. The purpose of the recommendations report is to ensure that current and future signage facilitates safe and positive journeys and enhances the dispersal of visitors and their connection with the people and the places of the City of Rockingham region.

In 2019 The City of Rockingham commissioned the development of a five year Tourism Destination Strategy. The key strategic objective of this Strategy is to effectively and measurably promote Rockingham as Western Australia’s premium coastal destination – as a place to visit, live and invest in.

The Tourism Destination Strategy 2019/2024 identified that “Lack of identifiable destination and directional signage for visitors” is one of key weaknesses in the Destination Strategy’s SWOT analysis. This include vehicular & pedestrian wayfinding and an overall lack of meaningful interpretive signage. Other weaknesses include a lack of destination branding billboards promoting Rockingham’s attractions on the Kwinana Freeway. Old and outdated visitor information bay content and locations.

Wayfound broke the project into sections. This included;

  • All vehicle wayfinding within the City of Rockingham including major highways and tourist routes linking to the designated tourist attractions.
  • Vehicle wayfinding and directional signage to parking and tourist services within the City of Rockingham.
  • Pedestrian wayfinding within City of Rockingham tourist precinct.
  • All tourism infrastructure including City of Rockingham entry statements, tourism infrastructure including – Visitor Centres, visitor information bays and interpretive signage.

Wayfound audited and GPS located all signage and tourism infrastructure within the City of Rockingham. All tourist routes were video recorded for later reference. In the accompanying audit we located all signage gaps and made recommendations where and what type of signs should be installed. The report contained all of our findings, best practice, recommendations and a complete signage audit.
